Kokonati and its beginning...
Living on an island, we always took our coconuts seriously. We are just happy the rest of the world has caught on!
My name is Bûmika (meaning Earth Lady in Sanskrit). My great-grandfather was one of Ceylon’s pioneer coconut oil millers, making me a fourth-generation coconut oil miller. I moved to NZ to be with my father, who resided here when he had to have heart surgery. Call it lucky timing, call it providence, but I believe Mother Earth gave us the right opportunity to make such a life-changing move. There was a growing demand for coconut products that our family had made for generations in Sri Lanka. So began Kokonati.
Pure Ceylon Kokonati
was born… of love. Love for my father and mother, whom I could no longer let live alone. And love for the two beautiful ‘island’ countries we now call home, Ceylon and New Zealand.
Pure Ceylon…
Because our range of pure coconut products is grown and produced only in Ceylon. It is also an accolade to my husband, Mosqi’s past. He was a pure Ceylon tea planter while we lived there.
Kokonati…
Because it is the Māori word for Coconut, and it enunciates how nutty we are about our coconuts!
Passionate about organic, regenerative agriculture, sustainability, and collective partnerships, we source Kokonati products exclusively from smallholder farms and millers in the rural villages of the coconut triangle of Sri Lanka. We craft every Kokonati product in a dedicated mill, producing only that type of product. So, the quality is the best it can be, with multigenerational expertise and knowledge guiding every step of the making. Ceylon is blessed with an abundance of healthy, tropical fruits, nuts, herbs, and spices that, as Lankans, we use daily. It should rightly be shared with the world. So we started sharing what we knew best. Coconuts, spices, and fruits.
Mosqi and I, launched pure Ceylon Kokonati in 2013, a range of high-quality, reasonably priced, sustainably made coconut products. The range grew to include Heirloom spices and fruits.
We are 100% New Zealand-owned and operated. We take pride in making clean tropical ingredients available in New Zealand, as they don’t grow here. Several ethical brands here and overseas use Kokonati bulk products in making clean, green foods and cosmetic products.
Sales of Kokonati products support rural communities and traditional livelihoods. We ethically harvest all our products, adhering to zero waste in production where possible. Every part of the coconut is utilized in making another product. Kokonati products are single-ingredient, packed at source, never blended, single-origin, GMO-free, and vegan.
We live by the principles of a balanced life, live and let live.
Doing our best to leave everything a little better than when we found it…
